The Art of Fine Line Tattooing at Stillhaus
Fine line tattooing is a contemporary style that uses thin, crisp lines and subtle shading to create intricate designs. Rather than relying on bold outlines, fine line work focuses on delicate details, making it suitable for everything from simple lettering and small symbols to more elaborate illustrations.
At Stillhaus Tattoo Club, our fine line artists, Paige and Manth, bring their individual drawing backgrounds to a range of styles, including floral and botanical tattoos, animals and wildlife, fine line portraits, geometric patterns and ornamental artwork.
Using single needles and tightly grouped round liners, our artists create clean, consistent line work that gives each design its distinctive appearance. The emphasis on thoughtful composition, with enough space between details to keep the artwork clear and easy to distinguish.
What Goes Into Our Fine Line Work?
With fine line tattoos, even the smallest variation in a line can affect the finished design. Our artists use specialist techniques to achieve the accuracy needed for this detailed style of tattooing.
Single-Needle Precision
Fine line tattooing requires careful control of needle depth, pressure and hand speed. Our artists use single needles and tight round liners to create consistent lines, aiming for a clean single pass rather than overworking the skin.
Adding Texture Without Heavy Shading
Fine line tattoos aren't limited to simple outlines. Techniques such as whip shading and dot work can introduce gentle texture and subtle variation while maintaining the delicate appearance of the artwork.
Our artists specialise in fine line botanical, ornamental, script and combinations that keep the piece delicate but still legible for years to come.
Creating Balance Through Negative Space
The space between lines is just as important as the lines themselves. Our artists consider how individual elements sit together, using negative space and carefully chosen line weights to keep designs balanced and recognisable, even from a distance.

Getting Your Fine Lino Tattoo Just Right
One of the most important considerations with fine line tattoos is making sure the design has enough room for its details.
Although this style is often associated with small tattoos, intricate artwork can benefit from being slightly larger. Very fine details placed too closely together may become less distinct as the tattoo ages.
At Stillhaus, your tattoo begins with a one-to-one consultation where you can share reference images, sketches, Pinterest boards or just an initial idea. Your artist then develops a custom design, making any necessary adjustments to its size, line thickness and spacing.
You'll have the opportunity to review your design before your appointment, with final placement adjustments made on the day.

Why Choose Stillhaus for Your Fine Line Tattoo?
At Stillhaus, we approach fine line tattooing with a focus on how each design will look beyond the initial appointment.
Our artists create custom artwork based on your ideas and anatomy, rather than simply reducing an existing drawing to tattoo size. With a private studio environment, individual consultations and time dedicated to the finer details, we aim to create tattoos that remain delicate and recognisable as they age.

Fine Line Tattoo FAQs
Most fine line tattoos take between 30 minutes and two hours. Small symbols, simple lettering and minimal floral designs can often be completed within this time, while larger or more intricate pieces may require a full-day session or longer.
Fine line tattoos generally work best on relatively stable, flat areas of skin. Suitable placements include the outer forearm, upper inner forearm, upper back and calf. Areas such as finger, palms, feet and high-friction areas can be more challenging due to the increased risk of fading or spreading.
All tattoos naturally soften as they heal and age. Fine line tattoos may experience slight spreading or fading over time, particularly when designs contain densely packed details or are exposed to friction and sunlight.
Some fine line tattoos may benefit from a minor touch-up, particularly on hands, fingers, feet or other areas where ink retention can be more challenging. At Stillhaus, we assess each healed tattoo individually before recommending any additional work.
Yes. Skin texture, dryness, scarring, stretch marks and sun damage can influence how ink settles. Our artists assess your skin and may need to adjust the needle choice, line spacing or design size where necessary.
Keep your tattoo clean and lightly moisturised, avoiding scratching, picking or soaking it for the first two weeks. Once healed, use SPF 50 to help protect the tattoo from premature fading. Stillhaus provides written aftercare guidance following your appointment.
